There are four general environments on the maps where you'll find mushrooms growing: the grass on the top of any section of island, the mud denoted by brown pits with walking boards above them to keep your little froggy feet clean, indoors depending on the air quality, and in the water dotted about as you explore the pond wandering between the island segments.

Using the genetic keys of the new species you create you can unlock the paths between the waking and dreaming worlds, explore the land of those still hibernating, and embark on a journey to help restore the lost populations and find out what happened.

It originally started as a gamejam entry for FletchFest 2023, with the theme of ‘pond’. Ell had always joked about ‘what if APICO but frog?’ before, and this seemed a perfect opportunity to play with the concept and how to take things in a new direction.

Started in 2020, Ell always wanted to make video games - thanks to COVID of all things, a shift in working life meant they could actually make that dream a reality.
When you spot them, mushrooms need to grow from spores before you can collect them, which takes a bit of in-game time. This can be frustrating as the weather conditions change, so look for new mushrooms right when the weather changes, since you may have a relatively small window to find them.
In the demo there were only a few traits to play with - Mudborne Game the full game introduces you to all 7, not just min/maxxing but also their special effects that those frogs can bring. You’ve seen a glimpse of this with the amplitude frogs and the pressure pads, but there’ll be ribbet powered croakwork, as well as climate modifying properties thanks to umbrage and saturation.
